“Just a few days after the thing comes to light, it already has stereotypes associated with it; it’s already somehow a parody of itself. That’s insane. We’re talking about less than a week here and it’s already stale enough to make fun of!”
Early adopters are automatically ironic and meta. But 70% of early Muxtapers will keep doing it for 3 months, and 30% will keep doing it for 6 months and by then “normal” people will start doing it too. Being noticeable enough for early ridicule means it’s good product.
As an aside, yesterday when I was listening to Vampire Weekend on a CD I was thinking about how if you’re listening to “new” music on an album you are probably by definition lamely uncool.
