At Narita International Airport in Tokyo, just before immigration, after walking through about 200 yards or so of blank white corridors, you come across this diorama: Two fake figures, on a fake porch, welcoming you.

Looking at it now it seems almost comically ridiculous, but, man, when you come off a twelve-hour flight, groggy and delirious, and see this shining beacon in a sea of empty white, you really feel like you’ve made it.
